The startup sector in India is at its peak and this enticed Shashank Sharma to bring his idea to reality. According to him, along with hard work and determination, proper planning is required to become a successful entrepreneur.
Even before completing his bachelor’s of engineering, he cofounded Bhangaarchand. It is a student-managed startup, organizing the waste management sector and making recycling process better. They pick up the Waste from the Door of the consumer at their preferred time and send it for recycling. He along with Surya Pratap Singh Chauhan, Prashant Raghuwanshi, and Aman Sharma came together and brought this amazing idea to reality.

Please provide a brief overview of your product/ service.
In India, every metro city is facing the problem of waste disposal. The improper sorting of the waste at an initial level has reduced the percentage of recycling. In India, the percentage of recycling is about 20% while for other developed countries it has reached to 75%.
BhangaarChand is the India’s first toll-free waste management startup that provides free pick up service of waste (scrap). At present scenario, people are that busy that they simply don’t care about their waste so we want to make them earn money from the thing which they use to throw earlier. We are trying to organize this unorganized sector by creating a common platform for selling the waste.
What current problem is your venture targeting or what facility / requirement do you provide that target customers lack?
Every year since childhood we had a textbook dedicated to environmental studies. Catchy recycling slogans and great taglines were a part of one or the other safe environment campaign even in the college. ‘Go green-reduce, reuse, recycle’ is a mere slogan because there are no practical implementations. A survey revealed the unorganized way followed by junk dealers and scrap merchants to collect and manage waste. The discovery of this inefficiency led us to create a more organized and productive process and BhangaarChand its existence.
The problem of WASTE is growing each day in India and we have no effective management to recycle it. So we aim to deal with it and make the recycling process better. We provide a common platform to our customers to sell their metal scrap, paper waste, plastic waste, and e-waste (starting soon).

People are too busy to care about their waste so we included them into this recycling process by helping them make money from what they were supposed to throw earlier.

What is the customer segment that you will target? Also mention the market size of your product/service.
From small vendors to big malls, affluent as well as middle –class families, academic institutes to various government and non-government organizations, all are our customers as they would be generating an enormous amount of waste-material which can’t be further used if recycled . Particularly talking about railways and various industries there is more than 10,000 tons of scrap every year whose proper treatment always remained an issue for them.

What was the most challenging part of your journey till now?
How did you overcome those challenges?
Currently, we have a lack of funds so we invest selectively for our resources. The ones which are of utmost importance, we only invest in that. Rest we are approaching investors and as per feedback strengthening ourselves by eliminating the drawbacks.
Share some details about the investments that you have been able to fetch for the business till now.
We have been able to raise about four lakhs from various debenture holders and from some our friends.
Highlight your growth rate mentioning the estimated market size in the following years.
Presently in India there is no such platform so we see ourselves expanding throughout India. Starting from Vidisha, a small town in Madhya Pradesh, our first goal is to remain present throughout M.P and then to other states. After that we want to establish our own recycling plants in the near future so that we can directly buy scrap from our customers and can recycle and regenerate. Setting up our own recycling plants will help us produce our own recycled products whose production cost would be less than the current goods (manufactured through the fresh resources).
How do you protect yourself from the problem of Brain Drain?
We have an amazing team. We all are close friends so at such time when one of us feels low then rest of the team makes it easy for him. We talk on each issue and this helps us staying away from Brain Drain.

At this point of time there are some startups working on the same model but none of them show long term stability as they are working on a completely different pattern. They have made their contacts with the local shops and tried to provide an online platform but we actually are buying the scrap directly and delivering it to recycling plants. This is making a big difference. We are giving a proper training to our pick up boys, so that there is enhancement in professionalism and service.

Especially in a world like today, where natural resources and energy are being used up at an alarming rate and massive tons of waste is produced every second the startup goes door to door just at a call for collecting waste. This eliminates pollution and wastage of things that can easily be reused and recycled, which is a major environmental benefit. Another appreciable social benefit is hiring of junk collectors. The junk collectors who have been hired are being paid high enough than others in the market. It also brings them stable income.

I am hard working. I can work in most adverse situations. Initially, when we started, I with my team worked as labors. We were the one who use to be there to collect waste without any vehicle and used to carry it on our shoulders so that we can save transportation money.

For achieving anything big in this world you really need to struggle a lot, maybe at times, you feel that you are a looser but at that time do not give up. Things will become easy may be after some time.

Expanding my startup to at least in 5 states

I will not pursue engineering; in fact, I will not waste my time. I will start the same ASAP.
