From a resource consultant to heading a full-fledged marketplace that brings back the age-old barter system to the forefront, Harinder Sharma has surely taken several leaps and bounds. He has been working in the real estate industry for more than a decade, which is where he got the idea to reintroduce the barter system to the C2C market in India. After completing his MBA, in marketing/HR, he undertook several professions after ending up in the real estate sector.
He has always been considered an ambitious person, driven by ingenuity. His knack for identifying trends before they emerge has given him ample reputation among his peers. Currently he is busy scaling his latest venture Barterdaddy among real estate sector, trying to gain vital traction.
Please provide a brief overview of your product/ service.
Barterdaddy.com is India’s First Online exchange marketplace, the idea behind this venture is promoting online exchange of goods and services. There is very basic thoughtb process when you buy something new, in the back of your mind you think that I have many things at home which I do not use frequently or don’t use at all, so we created this concept capturing that back of mind concern, why to BUY, do EXCHANGE with what you have !!!!!! Initially we are promoting barter of Real Estate, Automobiles, Mobile n Tabs, Electronics n computers, Home n furniture and business & Services.
What inspired you to build the above product/ service?
I was working on media & property exchange/barter offline and the response was tremendous, so the idea of online exchange germinated from there. That if people are interested for exchange of their properties why not other things like cars/phones and so on……
What is your life mantra?

What was the most challenging part of your journey till now?
The most challenging part of in the working of barterdaddy was finalizing a revenue model for the venture, because at the initial stage you cannot levy a charge on the customer till the time you reach at a level of value addition to the people.
How did you overcome those challenges?
We involved businesses in our mainstream of barter, and that helped us in devising a sustainable revenue model. That if you want to exchange your old items with new, we can augment the sales of these business and that can help us in generating revenues from the businesses.
Share some details about the investments that you have been able to fetch for the business till now.
We are into a bootstrapping stage, a lot of people are showing interest in the venture but we are very conservative about diluting equity at this juncture. We need good mentors than only investors/funders.
How do you protect yourself from the problem of Brain Drain?
Employees are very vital asset of any organization and obviously loosing them to the competition is a big loss. We believe in developing a sense of “Ownness” in our people so that they can see future with us.

sometimes I trust people too much that I explain every to them related to my concept/idea, I think one should be bit conservative on that front because a lot of copy cat happens in the market.

What are your plans for next 3 years?
I want to take barterdaddy at a respectable level and want to bring a behavioral change in the people that even if you have extra money don’t waste it, optimize you stuff by way of exchanging. If something is not useful for you may be useful for someone else.
If you get a chance to start your career again what would you do differently this time?
I ll start a HR recruitment company, with a difference that people can be recruited in your company on a sample stay basis, if you like the work keep them otherwise say bye.
