"Experiment and you will get delightful experiences. Risks are not really that risky"
What does it take to become an entrepreneur? When it comes to Gagan Jain, the answer would be a decade of experience managing startups as well as large businesses in India and abroad. He completed his post-graduation in marketing after which he went on to gain experience in various management roles across different organizations. People closely associated with him find Gagan to be highly logical and always ready with solutions to problems. This is what pushed him to greater heights.
Gagan comes across as a true visionary brimming with new ideas and open to any new policies and processes. An enterprising person in the true sense of the word and can achieve many a milestone. However, during the course of his career, he always admired creativity, which was the core reason behind his latest venture. The main aim behind launching Rangrage was to create products, which have a touch of art with supreme utility value for the customers. The platform not only caters to artists but also helps customers discover and buy artistic products, which they are not able to do otherwise. Within a span of few years, Rangrage has created a niche for itself and become a one-stop gateway for hand-painted designs.
Please provide a brief overview of your product/ service.
We are Rang Rage – a premium brand of Hand-painted lifestyle products. We are out on a mission to inspire aesthetics in your eating, drinking, sleeping, wearing and pretty much your living. As a bonus, Rang Rage is happy to create a strong social impact on the artists and their families.
Each of our products inspires for an element of life one have never noticed before. Sometimes our designs may take into the lap of nature, other times they may trigger a rebellion against corruption. Each of our designs is a story in itself. More so because they are hand-painted by artists whose life stories continue to inspire us.
What inspired you to build the above product/ service?
We are a bunch of art-crazed people bitten by the aesthetic bug so much so that each of our designs slips into our lives.
We want to infuse art in everyday life and make it not only affordable but also usable. In addition, we want each of our products to tell an inspiring tale. We want your pillow cover as aesthetic as that cotton tee you will wear for that party. We want your guests to see what our artist saw while painting a wooden tea tray. And while we do this, some unsung artist somewhere gets his due.
We have realized there is gap in the market for genuine hand-made products with contemporary designs. We aim to address that with our Hand-painted range of products.
What is your life mantra?
Experiment and you will get delightful experiences. Risks are not really that risky.
What was the most challenging part of your journey till now?
We think that the most challenging part till date was to build the network of 100+ artists who can create superior quality products consistently.
How did you overcome those challenges?
With some luck we realized that Home makers in India have natural inclination towards art. If we can nurture them and offer them flexible working environment, we can create a highly motivated work force. Hence we started working with housewives in Indore and near by villages. We spend good amount of time in training them. From building confidence to develop focus on quality work, we worked with them on various issues.
We have also developed a model where they work as freelancers from the comfort of their home. We understood that their first priority will always be their family (and rightly so). So we worked on the model where they can plan their time as per their convenience and still deliver the work on time.
It took us almost 18 months to perfect the value chain, but results are extremely encouraging. But once done, they are highly talented. In fact we are surprised that while why this talented work force is not being utilized to their calibre.
Share some details about the investments that you have been able to fetch for the business till now.
We are self funded till now as the focus has been more on developing varied product categories, testing the market acceptability, readying production scalability, and developing the operational capabilities. With housewives working as freelancers, it is proven that we can scale up production of Hand-painted fashion and lifestyle products and deliver delightful experience to our customers consistently.
Now we are in the process for raising funds to expand our international presence.
How do you protect yourself from the problem of Brain Drain?
We have not faced any issue of brain drain because our employees are doing what they really love i.e. paint. So their love and our business is in perfect sync. Any company which can achieve align the interest of business and employee will not face issue of brain drain.
