Arushi Verma did Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Kirori Mal College. Soon after that, she went to pursue Master’s Degree in Development Economics from School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Being a passionate student of economics, Arushi accumulated vast experience in this field by working for Planning Commission of India, ASER Centre, and World Bank Group. To help people live a healthy life, she co-founded Fitpass, which is a fitness app that connects people to the best gyms and health studios nearby.

Please provide a brief overview of your product/ service.

Fitpass has brought the finest fitness brands on one platform to help you have the kind of workout you desire.  What inspired you to build the above product/ service?

With changing lifestyle in the society, we saw that today’s youth is getting aware about fitness. Thanks to a result of economic liberalization in the country. We identified that young people want to adopt a healthy lifestyle but due to their hectic routine, they don’t get time to go to a gym to work out on a daily basis. Also due to inadequate fitness facilities in the country they are completely dependent on city gyms and fitness centers which is an expensive affair for many. Keeping these in mind, we decided to devise a full-stack managed marketplace that builds the health and fitness ecosystem by removing market friction and inefficiencies through the use of technology. Thus, we conceptualized fitpass—an app which is your pass to fitness. Fitpass is available for Rs999 and gives you authority to access over 1000 gyms and fitness studios in the national capital region. Also, fitpass gives its users flexibility and accessibility to work out whenever they want and wherever they want.

What is your life mantra?

Every day is a new day. Let’s make the most of it!

What was the most challenging part of your journey till now?

Starting a business in India has a few challenges attached with it, especially if you foray in a comparatively new segment. The main challenges we faced were about explaining our concept to the gym owners and convincing them to come onboard with us. Also, the concept of a fitness app is also very new. Educating the customers and other stakeholders was one of the major challenges.

How did you overcome those challenges?

Times are changing and hence we could gradually convince people to play their part in developing a fitness ecosystem in the country. People are getting used to it and we firmly believe the day isn’t far when there will be a majority of fitness conscious people.

Share some details about the investments that you have been able to fetch for the business till now.

It’s a bootstrapped startup. But we are in negotiations with a number of investors for funding. Soon we shall be announcing it.

  • One mistake you believe every individual must avoid

Not following their gut feeling. If it’s coming from within it must mean something.

  • One most important lesson that you have learnt till now

Patience is the key to everything in a startup.

What are your plans for next 3 years?

I envision fitpass as the only partner that one will need to get and stay fit. We are an early stage company with huge plans. Markets that we have identified for expansion have a couple of things in common – they’re cities where people want to get fit, talent is locally available for hiring and gym/fitness studios have sufficient geographic density – Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh. These markets are bigger than all of SE Asia combined, are 2x UK market. With these equations, we are hopeful to create a niche for fitpass.

If you get a chance to start your career again what would you do differently this time?

I would work before going for my masters – it strengthens you and makes you more confident while dealing with customers and partners.
