Please provide a brief overview of your product/ service.

Launched in 2012, PlanMyMedicalTrip.com is a Pune-based solutions provider for anyone looking for affordable medical services and necessary infrastructure at hospitals that best address the patient’s concern. PlanMyMedicalTrip.com is a unique platform that leverages its 1,500+ tie-ups with reputed hospitals and doctors in India and Turkey to provide the best service to international patients. The portal, with its patient-friendly approach, is driven by the commitment of providing end-to-end medical assistance to everyone in need. Unlike its competitors, it also allows users to compare the treatment costs across different city hospitals so they can make a prudent choice.

What inspired you to build the above product/ service?

Dr. Rajeev Rane (Founder of PlanMyMedicalTrip.com) has been a part of the medical industry for more than 30 years now. Having established a hospital in the city of Bardoli, the NRI city of India, he had plenty of patients from all over the world come to him for specific treatments. This coupled with Dr. Rajeev’s and Mr. Anurav Rane’s close association with the travel industry – they were both a part of Dziner Holidays that they launched in the year 2000 – laid the foundation for PlanMyMedicalTrip.com. After assisting patients at Bardoli, the duo realised that it was time to use their skills and experience for a greater cause. This is how the idea of PlanMyMedicaTrip.com was born. The aim of the venture was to allow everyone to use the internet and avail the best suited medical services and facilities in any part of the world at a competitive price.

What is your life mantra?

We believe that “humanity is the only religion”.

What was the most challenging part of your journey till now?

The marketing costs to promote our venture were quite high. We also had to struggle to create awareness about ‘what we were’ and ‘how we could help’ in different regions across the globe.

How did you overcome those challenges?

We singularly focused on keeping the costs low by capitalising on our existing resource pool and seeking the help of our government which has been keen on projecting India as a medical tourism hub.

Share some details about the investments that you have been able to fetch for the business till now.

For the most part of our journey, we have been a bootstrapped venture and we were comfortable until we recently decided to expand rapidly into international markets and improve our digital presence. We then successfully raised our first round of Rs. 1.25 crore from angel investors in January this year.

How do you protect yourself from the problem of Brain Drain?

Since we are operating in a niche sector that’s not very popular, we don’t see a brain drain as big a problems as hiring the right talent. Once we have found these people, we have some unique industry practices for employee retention such as Keeping up team motivation, maintaining transparency across all departments and a strong performance driven compensation system.

According to you, what are the three qualities an individual must have to achieve success?

There are three attributes – passion, focus and persistence. We believe that passion drives people to achieve more than one can even imagine. The second, focus, is key if a person or an organisation has to be successful. Without a goal in sight, we’d all be leading nowhere. The third quality is persistence because it keeps the person going through ups and downs and encourages them to keep trying without giving up midway.

Which online tools/ services/ apps do you use the most and would like to recommend as well?

Apart from the PlanMyMedicalTrip app and my email apps, I spend a lot of time on TED conferences for my daily dose of knowledge. I rely on Wunderlist to keep track of what all needs my time and attention through the day – by the end of the day, everything needs to be ticked off. I use Feedly and ET to keep abreast of what the competition is doing. Then there are a few banking apps that allow me to make and approve payments on-the-go. Finally, I also jot down ideas as and when they occur with the help of Notes and Pages.

Share any one habit which you think makes you more productive.

Keeping myself organised using task management tools allows me to prioritise my work and gives me some personal time after I get home.

Share any one habit which you wish to change in yourself.

Haha… This will get me into trouble if my employees read it. I need to make it a habit of reaching office before the first employee walks in.

Answer in less than 50 words

  • One tip to success:

Follow your passion!

  • One mistake you believe every individual must avoid:

Don’t be a risk taker, be a risk manager.

  • One most important lesson that you have learnt till now:

Assumptions are only close to reality, they are never the reality; avoid relying on them.

What are your plans for next 3 years?

To make PlanMyMedicalTrip.com a global platform for healthcare solutions. We wish to create an ecosystem that will grant easy access to healthcare to everyone across the globe.

If you get a chance to start your career again what would you do differently this time?

I don’t believe in keeping regrets. I have trained myself to value every decision I make. Even when a decision doesn’t fall in place, I make it a point to correct it rather than spend time moping about what could have happened had I taken a different course.

What are your top three getaway destinations?

After India and Turkey, we consider Dubai, Thailand and Germany as the top three gateway destinations for medical tourism. We hope to be present at prominent and the most sought-after healthcare destinations. This alone will help us become the one-stop destination for all the health needs.
